Alexis Rafael’s book, entitled, Sex and the Cyborg Goddess, is a fascinating narrative about the coming-of-age during the radical social transformations of the 1970s. Ana, the novel’s female protagonist, matures in and through the New York Art World, inspired by a perceptive Yale Professor to interview new iconic figures from Warhol to Rauschenberg. Both Ana and the Professor are aware of the shocking – long repressed – inequities of the art world (inequities that continue to survive today).
Rafael’s protagonist stumbles through Free Love, Consciousness Rising, and Conservative family ties on her circuitous path to becoming a sexual libertine, a political activist and finally, importantly, a filmmaker.
The author’s true name is Alexis Krasilovsky, Professor in the Department of Cinema and Television Arts at California State University, Northridge. She is a writer, director of the films, End of the Art World, Let Them Eat Cake, and Women Behind the Camera. She is the winner of four Best Documentary Awards.
